Our beef

Our cattle are all pure bred or at least three quarters Aberdeen Angus and most are born on the farm and spend all their lives here. They are reared in the most natural conditions and graze over many acres of beautiful Devon countryside throughout the spring, summer and autumn eating only our own lush grass. We bring them indoors during the winter and then they eat the hay that we have made from our own grass during the previous summer. We are therefore virtually self sufficient in cattle feed. The system is as sustainable as we can make it and all the manure collected over the winter is recycled back onto the fields in spring to fertilise the grass.

Our calves are weaned late and grow slowly and naturally to mature at around 26-28 months. Being grass fed, the meat contains more beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E and, of course, it tastes better!

The Aberdeen Angus is one of the best known beef breeds and has been developed to give the best flavour, succulence and eating quality. They thrive in a traditional grass based environment to produce a natural product and the beef has the perfect balance of fat and lean with the essential “marbling” of fine threads of fat interwoven with the lean to ensure tenderness when cooked and to bring out the flavour.

In an age of increasing food miles and livestock being bought and sold several times and being moved around the country, the only journey that most of our animals make will be their final trip to the nearby abattoir which is a small,  family run business with similar values to our own. The beef is hung there for two to three weeks before being expertly prepared to our specification by the resident butcher.

We work hard to rear happy cows; a stress free life helps to ensure excellent beef!
